Unit 2:  5 - Groups in Numbers 6-10.

In this unit: 

*We will be looking to see that the numbers 6-10 are composed of a 5-group and more ones.

*We will order numbers from 1-10 and use the information to create and answer questions about objects.

*We will understand that a number is 1 greater than the number before it and 1 less than the number after it

*Some of the terms introduced in this unit are number partners, equal, not equal, 5-group, triangles and hexagons.

What can you do support your child in what they are learning in school at home?

*Count things at home in 5-groups to help your child see the 5 in 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.  For example, 8 crayons can be counted using 5-groups:  "5 and 3 make 8."

Square-Inch Tiles (Notice how we are working on making the equations 5 + 1, etc.) 

 *Review or go over shapes (circles, rectangles, squares, triangles and hexagons.)  Talk about the attributes of each shape.  How many sides does the shape have?  How many corners or points does the shape have?  For rectangles and squares:  What makes the sides special?  (Rectangle:  2 sides are long and 2 sides are short.  Square:  All of the sides are the same length.)  We will look more at triangles and hexagons in this unit.

*Look for shapes in the environment (indoors or outdoors.)  Talk about them. :)

*Count objects with your child.

*Count aloud with your child.  Our goal is to have every kindergartner counting to 100 by 1's by the end of the year.  Don't worry if your child is not doing this right now.  Work with your child to increase the number they can count to with continued practice.
